Worship

I WENT TO WORSHIP GOD LAST SUNDAY

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was met at the door
By people hurrying by Feeling,
“Well that’s done for the week.”

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was met at the door
By ushers who were closing the door
Feeling glad to see them go.

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was told at the door
(By just a boy)
It’s not time to worship any more.

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was told at the door
(By the assistant minister)
The sermon of the day is ended. There is no more.

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was told at the door
By the worship leader,
“The singing has ended. There is no more.”

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was met at the door
By the head minister who said
Come back to worship some other time.

I went to church to worship God last Sunday
But was met at the door
By a man with a set of keys,
Who said, “It’s not TIME to worship ANYMORE.”

But in my heart I knew it was not true
All this about worship being through.
My God was to big and he was to good
To ever be finished with worshiping him.

For I have stayed home to worship God
And was met at the door of my heart
By the Spirit of God
Who witnessed to me, “I am with you always”

For I have worked at home and worship God
And was met at the door of my heart
By the Spirit of Christ who said to me,
“Come unto me all who labor.”

For I have been home alone to worship God
And was met at the door of my heart
By the Holy Heavenly Father
Who said, “Draw near to me.”

I now go to my Heavenly Father to worship
And am met at the door of my heart
By my Savior, Jesus
Who is the way, the truth, and the light.

I know no one can close the book of psalms on me
My heart is open always to sing.
God’s word is always before me
To speak of His will to me.

I know no one can close the doorway to God
As Christ tells me he is the door.
Christ bids me come sit with him and
Cast all my cares on him.

I know no one can turn the lights out
To keep me from worshiping him.
Jesus is the light and
He draws me close to him.

But, this coming Sunday I’ll try again
To go the church to worship
